What are Viruses And How To Evade Them
PC viruses are far and wide. This article I have written will illustrate you how to be alert and how to stay away from receiving infections. I know, many might say I have the latest updated version of the anti virus, but guys that's just not enough to get the complete protection. But still there are few precautions you can take. And yes, if you like reading this article, then don't forget to visit my blog for many tutorials. You are sure to have some great time there, learning a new thing daily.
Well, To begin with, what is a virus?
Several types of viruses are present, all over the Net. Characteristic viruses are, in words of one syllable, programs that are designed to cause a variety of harmful activities on your beloved machine. I guess many would have faced this file for sure, so called as corrupt files, which just keep on multiplying themselves to just effect your hard drive. One of the common ways of getting the virus is through mail. Yes, guys there immeasurable amount of viruses which have the tendency of mailing themselves to various people placed in your address book. Well, this is one of the fastest ways to spread a virus. And it is not just because they are rightly placed in your inbox, but also because maximum number of people fall pray to these intolerable pranks. Well, I guess they are not just pranks. One of the strong points that are instilled in these mailing viruses are they keep that tendency of convincing the reader of the mail, to download the attachment, in which they are placed. They usually come from address that are present in your address book. Well, in this regard I would just say that it wouldn't cause detriment in just mailing back to the sender, if they had really sent it. Ok, lets now discuss a few of these virus types.
Worms : (Also, I guess its quite a common type of infecting files)
Worms are discrete kind of infecting files, but the main reason of preparing remains the same. How do they work? They have the tendency of copying themselves a various number of times on a network by sending a number of commands to the servers. And one of the common reason is to eat up as much possible bandwidth. As of now the best example that comes to my mind is red Worm. Certain worms like, SQL slammer are designed to send themselves again and again so as to block up networks, and on occasion all of the internet. Worms more often than not have an effect on servers further than home users. It is alleged that the majority worms are labors from RIAA in effort to stop piracy. Unluckily, the RIAA has the power to do it and yet if caught, don't expect any action to be taken.
Now going on to next type: Trojans
Trojans are yet again an alternative manner of virus. They are, in basic terms, a server which allows hackers to trespass and hold sway over the your computer. Ever encountered these actions? Namely: automatically control of mouse, ejecting the cd-rom, and few more. These are caused by the Trojan called Subseven, which enables a hacker to do all these on your machine.
Another destructive type of infections : MBR viruses
They are parallel to viruses, but as an alternative they get in the boot sector and can initiate intense harm when the computer is booted, a few can with no trouble, format your drive plainly by booting your computer. These are difficult to amputate.
A large amount of viruses boast a range of characteristics. For |instance, a worm can also be a Trojan and In addition infect the boot sector. It all a matter of, on what basis the virus is coded and what it is intended to do.
Watch out for extensions :
Extensions to consider out for are .exe .com .bat .scr .pif and .vbs. A virus writer will plainly rename it to one of these. Even after renaming they will work the same way. Like even if an .exe file os renamed to .bat , a batch file, it will work the same way.
The most important point being made over here is that, just don't take extra pain to run a program or file if you are unsure of what is is, or what is contains. And if, as mentioned above, came from your best friend via E mail, then just take few seconds out to mail him/her back, just to confirm information regarding the file sent to you. And one of the most obvious thing to do, is not having an address book. Better write them down somewhere else. And also removing the auto preview option will help a lot. Since few infections are initiated as soon as they are opened.
But guys be aware of these files, because E mails are not just the way to spread these infections. Another most common way is the downloading or in other words P2P, file sharing.
While downloading something it is recommended to check the size of the files you are downloading. Few teenagers might just get excited, when they see there favorite game , which usually covers up space up to 3 gb and they are getting all that in just 30mb. This I have encountered, over the net. Guys be aware, risk these file containing a virus is very high. Its not just like that. Even if a large amount garbage is added at the end of the program, it will work the same way, but the size will change from few mere kb to some 700 or 800mb.
Another thing to look out for : Icons. If a setup or file contains a blank icon, beware, be sure what it is. Because again risk of them containing a virus is quite high. I don't know why but most of the virus programmers, don't take up that extra effort to put up an icon.
The most common thing to do : scan with a good anti-virus. But as mentioned in description, that's not just good enough stop the viruses. Because anti-viruses, work on a particular only if they are informed of that virus, not if they are not. That's why it is recommended to update your anti-virus as frequently as possible.
Prevent server worms
A lot has been discussed on these infections. One of the most common thing to do is to run your server on Apache. It will help the cause for sure since they are highly unaffected by them.
Removing a virus
In regard to this many think that a clean install would do the trick for you, but sometimes a plain clean install won't just take them out. So to be aware over this, go for a low level format. This is in particular accuracy if you got infected by a MBR virus. It might work sometimes, but not everytime. There a large number of virus removing tools, depending the virus that got in. I would recommend you to give them a try before goin repartitioning and stuff like that.
